On being human

Happy holiday season, everyone.

As we reach one more year’s end and look ahead to yet another new year, I’m doing that thing that’s maybe expected, maybe common: thinking about things I hope can be better next year, and into the future.

And I just can’t shake one dominant thought.

We need to be more human with each other. I don’t mean be awful to each other – to follow our worst human impulses, or hew to the lowest common human denominator. I mean recognize our own and others’ humanity before anything else.

Are We Really Facing Race?

On the night of May 1, 2011, hundreds of people stormed the streets of New York and D.C. They waved the US flag and chanted our national anthem. They were celebrating the death of Osama bin Laden. Although such celebrations did not take place in the Twin Cities, I find it ironic and timely that the Saint Paul Foundation hosted its  5th Annual Facing Race Ambassador Awards at the Saint Paul River Center just two days later.

It is important to realize that extremist nationalism–systematically self-aggrandizing while ignorantly diminishing others—breeds racism. In fact, racism disguised in nationalism is even more dangerous, since it provides some seemingly legitimate excuse for racist thoughts and behavior. Whether it is “Latinos are taking our jobs” or “Muslims are terrorists” the result for individuals of the non-dominant culture is the same; they are marginalized, discriminated against and placed under heightened scrutiny.

My Thoughts on Race & Privilege in the Nonprofit Sector

main.jpgRace and Privilege. Two simple words with charged meanings that usually elicit an immediate reaction. It may be discomfort, fear, passion, or been-there-done-that attitude. Whatever your reaction, we want to TALK about it! And, we want to talk about YOUR experience. 

The nonprofit sector can be a change maker for the lives of many in our community through organizations that provide employment training for people with developmental disabilities, higher education access for traditionally underrepresented youth, energy assistance, legal services, among many others. We do good, and that’s why many of us were drawn to this sector. Despite the good, in every nonprofit position I’ve held over the last seven years, race and privilege have been an unaddressed issue. Whether it’s the educational gap between me and my clients in legal clinics, the lack of cultural understanding in work situations, or the opportunity to connect with students over a shared experience related to minority status–race and privilege are prevalent in our sector.
