Living into the answers

“Don't search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer.” – Rilke

At Minnesota Rising, our mission is to build trust, relationships, and a shared vision for the future of Minnesota, while developing the collective capacity of the rising generation to lead collaboratively. Just how we do this has evolved over time, as we continue to inquire into and assess our strategic intent and impact. For those nonprofiteers who also value emergent learning and developmental evaluation, we offer a couple of our questions and answers.

Five tips this stylist wants you to know when dressing for work

main.jpgIn late September, I was invited to be one of the experts at the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network Professional Polish event. As a stylist, I work with clients who are in the midst of change. They’re interviewing for a new job, transitioning into a more visible role at their current gig, re-entering the workforce, starting their own business or speaking before an audience. Each client is embarking on a life transition and ready to express the most polished, confident and authentic version of themselves.

And I love helping them do just that. I find wardrobe one of the easiest ways to shift not only how others see you, but more importantly, how you perceive yourself. Here are the five tips I want you to know when dressing for work.

Saturday morning connection: Scattershot Cafe recap

main.jpgHow many networking events do you attend where you bring your kids? How often do you get together with other young professionals in a playroom with boisterous toddlers climbing on plastic slides? My professional and personal worlds collided in this environment – a discussion about parenting as a nonprofit professional, part of YNPN’s Scattershot Café event. In the nine months since I’ve been a parent, happy hour has been more of a challenge, but this Saturday morning get-together was just my speed.

Things Learned at #FailLab

full.jpgPlaying Jenga … drawing birds … writing song lyrics with your non-dominant hand … defending an unpopular viewpoint … what do they have in common? They are all activities from the “Fail Lab” that happened during Taking the Alternative Route: The Upside to an Unexpected Journey, YNPN-TC’s June event.

In addition to some light-hearted failing, the event featured a conversation between Diane Tran (Founder of Minnesota Rising, Damon Runnals (Executive Director of the Southern Theater), and Pa Thao (the panel moderator and Assistant to the President and CEO of the Northern Achievement Zone).

Some of the best quotes from the night (in no particular order):

From Sideline to Frontline: Taking the Plunge

main.jpgIt's hard to believe it was only a year ago that I began volunteering with the YNPN-TC Programming Committee. The truth is, though, that I dabbled with the idea of joining YNPN-TC a lot sooner. I just didn't have the gumption to take the plunge.

I've been working in the nonprofit sector since I graduated from college. Fortunately, the supervisors I've had throughout the years have been incredibly supportive and encouraged me to pursue professional development opportunities whenever possible.

The problem was I didn't have a clue where to start looking for these opportunities. So, naturally, I did what anyone would do to find the answer to this question: I Googled it. And when I hit the search button, I got a ton of results, but the top ones featured this group called Young Nonprofit Professionals Network-Twin Cities.
