My time as a YNPN-TC boardie

Applications for the YNPN Twin Cities Board of Directors opened on September 8th—we are on the lookout for awesome people to join us!  I thought I would write a blog post describing my experience as a board member after nearly one year and hopefully inspire some of you to apply and help shape our beloved organization.

At the risk of sounding cheesy, I will say this about my decision to go for the YNPN Board – it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. It has given me an incredible opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. I’ve been able to meet and get to know other amazing nonprofit professionals and develop leadership skills I didn’t know I had. Being on the board is so much more than that though.

winegartweet.pngAs I walked into the September 2015 meeting of the YNPN Twin Cities Board of Directors, Intergalactic by the Beastie Boys filled the room. It played because that is what I chose as my “walk-up song” as part of an assignment all of the board members had to complete. I listened to the mix cd (we keep it old school sometimes; click on the image on the right to see the full list), and each board member’s song was so different and brought such a unique element to the cd as a whole—something that, as weird as it seems, is so representative of the board in general. We are made up of people from different backgrounds, ages, sectors, and interests - all coming together for the greater good of YNPN Twin Cities.

Admittedly, I did not jump in head first to YNPN-TC after I first joined. I would sign up for an event and then chicken out the day of until I finally mustered up enough courage to attend. It didn’t take long for me to realize just how much I could get out of YNPN, and each event made me feel so incredibly energized about the work the organization was doing. After seeing the board application open and close year after year, I finally decided to muster up that aforementioned courage and go for it – and now here I am! I ended up taking on the Communications Chair role and have gotten so much out of my experience this past year. I highly recommend each of you doing the same – we are so excited to have more people join us who are just as energized about the work we do here at YNPN Twin Cities and who are excited to build up their own professional and personal skill set. Don’t take my lead though – fill out your application now instead of waiting!

Want some more insight into being on the board?  There are a few ways!

  1. Connect with a board member for a drink or coffee!  I speak for all of us when I say we would all be so excited to meet up with you and chat. My twitter handle is at the top of this blog post, and you can check out the Board of Directors page on the website and find ways to get in touch with all of the other boardies! (P.S. If you have access to the YNPN-TC wiki, you can find out super-secret contact information there)
  2. Come to Board Games with the Board on Thursday, September 10. Play a game or two, and learn more about the YNPN-TC Board!  Check out the Facebook event for more information.
  3. Read Brandon Boat’s blog post from last year about becoming a board member “without really trying.” It is awesome.

Being on the YNPN-TC board is, in a nutshell, incredible. If you’re interested in shaping this organization that we all love in addition to expanding your network and building your skillset, be sure to apply!
