Getting to Know the New Crew - Part One

Meet Three of Our New Board Members - Cary, Lauren and Lucas!

When asked to do a short article about us for The Bridge, our collective competitiveness kicked in. These were going to be the coolest most informative new board member intros to date. But why do just an article? How about a puppet show? Interpretive dance? A three act play in iambic pentameter?

Okay, so we didn’t come up with a way quite that epic to tell you a little about ourselves, but we all think you’ll enjoy watching these short videos. We decided to take you on location to a spot around the Twin Cities that has shaped who we are today, and why we’re excited to be a part of YNPN’s latest board recruits.

Park Avenue United Methodist Church with Lauren

My name is Lauren Van Schepen, and I visited Park Avenue United Methodist Church, the place where I first considered how my life and future career could benefit my community. Being involved in the development and planning of a number of youth programs, volunteering with summer camps for preschoolers, and participating in a leadership seminar for young people all contributed to my early consideration of a career in the nonprofit sector. I currently work as the Nonprofit Services Assistant at the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, and am thrilled to start my term as a YNPN board member this January (2012).

Lake of the Isles with Lucas

Hey! I'm Lucas Havens and I'm excited to serve the wonderful nonprofit community in the Twin Cities as a YNPN Board Member. I moved to Minneapolis in 2008, and Lake of the Isles was the first place I remember feeling connected to the city. I knew that any city willing to maintain groomed cross-country ski trails for all on a public lake was one I wanted to invest my energy into.

My connection to the Twin Cities metro and desire to invest in this community as it has invested in me have only grown along with my career. I started out at Admission Possible, where I developed close relationships with a group of 40 Saint Paul students as I guided them along the path to college. My interest in helping people develop has continued into my current roles as Program Manager at Genesys Works, Board Member at the Madeline Island Music Camp, and Board Member at YNPN-TC.

The Depot with Cary

My name is Cary Walski and I selected the historic Depot in downtown Minneapolis because that’s where my Rainbow Rumpus colleagues and I accepted the DotOrg Award for Audience Awareness in 2007.

During my time volunteering as their web developer I learned a lot about managing a team, honed my technical skills and created a strong network with some amazing people who I continue to be in touch with today. That experience helped me land my current job as technology education and outreach coordinator at MAP for Nonprofits. I look forward to gaining new skills as a YNPN Twin Cities board member.
