Turns out, there isn’t such a list. Really, it’s subjective and unique to each transplant, so such a ranking may be flawed from the start.

The truth is, Twin Cities, you are pretty great. I’m guilty of the list-effect – I moved here in search of a robust nonprofit culture, rooted in progressive and organic organizing, professional in its volunteerism and appealing to young people who aren’t quite hipster, but want to pretend like they are for a couple years of their young lives.

Complete my master’s degree, teach myself Spanish, stop biting my nails.These are all goals of mine. One I am currently pursuing (Spanish). One I have failed at miserably time and time again (nails). And one I have penciled in my five-year plan (master’s degree). 

Most of us have visions for our future. According to Psychology Today, whether personal or professional, goals are important to keep us feeling focused, productive and happy. However, as the Facebook updates continue to pop up on our smartphones, to-do lists get longer and weekend plans are made, it’s easy to get overwhelmed or distracted.

Not the jolt of inspiration you might expect a facilitator to use to get a group of board members riled up, but it was exactly what we needed to ground us in the reality of some of our tough challenges ahead. All Hands On Deck: A Do It Together mindset in a DIY world

Although the article was focused on the Minneapolis arts scene, rereading it got me thinking about how the Do-It-Together concept could be applied to almost any creative or professional culture, including nonprofits.
